Student Orientation Guide

This guide has been made to introduce new students to the Islands Institute online community. By proceeding through this before your course begins, you will have a chance to learn and practice the basic tools you will need for your studies.

Individualized Learning in Online Community

You are among the first students to register for Islands Institute courses, and so all the supports we hope to provide students may not be available to you. We hope you will tell us what works and what doesn't, and help us to build a stimulating and supportive learning space.

The Islands Institute is intended to function as an online environment that will support your individual learning with a dynamic community of interested people, thought-provoking interactions, invigorating ideas and valuable resources. In addition, the Islands Institute learning model - described as "Situated Inquiry" - invites you to learn in place, through interaction and dialogue with your home community. We hope that as you pursue your inquiries and develop your course projects, you will both draw from and contribute to your home place, and the people and landscapes that nourish you.

We know that you come with your own ideas and practices. As a student here, you are invited to interrogate, transform, enrich and strengthen the Islands Institute community.
