Public Dreamer: Paula Jardine
Tending
the Fire
Fire is
spectacle,
magic,
celebration,
energy.
Fire
radiates
warmth and
light.
Lighting a
candle in
the dark,
we honor
the
sacred,
welcome
the
visitor,
and let
our own
light
shine.
Fire makes
a home, a
meal, and
a habitat
out of a
pitiless
world. And
fire
destroys
all that,
in an
angry
instant.
Fire is
destruction
and death.
Aggression,
hostility, cruelty, rage, revenge, retaliation: these destructive
emotions are refused by the dream of civil society and modern mental
health. Denied emotions return as the unacknowledged shadow,
possessing personal and global relationships. Paula Jardine would
have us engage the archetype. By entering its mystery, we might
assimilate its power, even while we loosen its grip.
