Jan Johnson Jan Johnson’s provocative sculptures regenerate not only old metal tools and machine parts but myths, both old and new. Traces of past wisdom brought to life in new form sparks the imagination to question our life today. A rusty rooster calls us to awaken and we ask, ‘What is the meaning of sacrifice? Is it sending our youth to war - as Johnson went to Viet Nam - or is it letting go of attachment and desire? Is Mammon the Bull of the Stock Exchange?’ In black, tiny figures we feel a powerful tug both disturbing and playful. Our smug and self-congratulating civilized life is confronted with the idea that we dream up enemies, as in To Serve and Protect. Our divinities are not in control of life’s circumstances. Perhaps our fearsome beasts and heavy burdens can come down to size when brought into the light. Jan Johnson, Moloch, mixed-media sculpture
The rich symbolism in Johnson’s sculptures may have come from his experiences with many different cultures, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
